Ledig youth journalists report on World Cup
In the build-up to the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, the Bakubung Economic Development Unit (BEDU) is developing the Ledig community’s future leaders’ journalism skills through the iSchoolAfrica 2010 Youth Press Team initiative.

Since its inception BEDU has provided clean water and renovated sports grounds to the Ledig community, as well as providing schools with computers, setting up Saturday and afternoon classes for learners, initiating skills development programmes to further local people’s skills, developing infrastructure and so much more.
Now, through collaboration with the iSchoolAfrica project (an initiative to promote Apple products in African classrooms), BEDU will bring young people from Ledig to the television sets of many South Africans, in partnership with DStv channel, MagicWorld, and CNN, in the iSchoolAfrica 2010 Youth Press Team initiative.
This joint project aims to get youth involved in the World Cup in a way that creates an unforgettable experience for them, while at the same time facilitating collaboration, inclusion and creativity.
“2010 is going to be an historic event in SA. With all eyes turning to us this campaign will play a role in making young South Africans feel included. It aims to be a creative, fun, educational and worthwhile experience for all participants,” says iSchools Africa programme co-ordinator, Michelle Lissoos.
These students are currently documenting their experiences as iSchool Africa reporters, learning more about reporting for television and developing their journalism skills.
iSchools have set up World Cup youth broadcasting teams in four provinces in private and public schools (teams of five learners in 15 schools) to report on themes related to this momentous event.
Five learners have been chosen from Ratheo Intermediate School in Ledig.
These young journalists will be reporting on themes such as local football fan culture; how the World Cup affects locals; foreign football teams; why sport is good for communities and World Cup tourism opportunities, and teaching viewers how to do the diski dance, among other football-related activities.
The five learners that make up the iSchool Africa 2010 Youth Press Team Project are : Clifford Moloto, Cornelia Monyane, Khethiwe Dlamini, Lungile Monges and Yanga Dlephu all from Ratheo Intermediate School in Ledig.

Five learners from Ledig’s Ratheo Intermediate School have been involved in the World Cup Youth Press team. The learners, who are required to work collaboratively, have been recording clips from the FIFA ticketing centre in Rustenburg, their schools and at home.
Speaking about the programme, BEDU’s CEO Kitty Scott said when they started working with children from Ledig, only two students met the requirements to enter university.
“We are proud to say that in the three years that we have worked here, 16 students can now enrol at university.”
Our intervention is reaping nice rewards; yes, it’s a process, but we are already seeing the progress,” Scott said.
Their collaboration serves to help them make the many critical decisions about content, structure and style, storyline, visuals and editing choices, to determine the success of their stories when these are broadcast.

The official launch of the iSchoolAfrica 2010 Youth Press Team will be held at the Apple iStore in Sandton, Johannesburg, on June 1, 2010.
