Ecological Ethics

As part of our commitment to best environmental practice at schools, the Worldwide Fund for Nature and the Wildlife and Environment Society of SA’s Eco-Schools Programme has been identified as an essential intervention.

Six schools in Ledig have been registered for the programme, which aims to inculcate an appreciation for our planet – and the management thereof – from an early age (primary school level).
The programme looks to explore issues of interdependence, the diversity of life, uncertainty and precaution, equity and justice, carrying capacity, rights and responsibilities.

Key strategies include:

  • Creating green schools and spreading the concept to homes.
  • Encouraging environmentally friendly alternatives.
  • Exploring environmental issues in subjects across the curriculum, such as in chemistry and technology, for example.
  • Improving food security in the community by growing nutritious food in a natural, sustainable way.
